Sweet drop biscuits were everywhere when we were in Savannah–I hadn’t had them since I was younger (my Mom made a variation of this recipe when I was growing up), but I came back newly obsessed and had to try my hand at them one lazy Sunday here in Astoria. They were a big hit with my roommates–especially with the addition of homemade strawberry butter (way easier than it sounds, by the way!).


You’ll need:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract


In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the dry ingredients. Add the shortening, and cut it into the mix (this can be done with your hands) until the whole bowl is crumbly. Mix in the milk and vanilla extract until just combined.


Plop small balls of dough (a little less than 1/4 cup worth) onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and cook in an oven set to 425 for 15-20 minutes, checking occasionally.


For the butter: Combine one stick of unsalted butter (at room temperature) in a bowl with 1/4 cup powdered sugar and strawberries that have been minced or even pulsed in a food processor (about 1/4 cup of these as well, although you can add more if you want a chunkier butter). Whip until combined, then spread onto warm biscuits and enjoy with these links from about the web this week:

French toast might actually be my favorite breakfast food–at least this version. Some restaurant-style french toast dishes can be too sweet, or overloaded with stuff on top (bananas! peanut butter! strawberries! chocolate chips!), but this quick, five-minute version (seriously!) tip toes that line perfectly. It’s simple, it will make your house smell amazing and your Sunday morning even that much better!

For 3-4 pieces of french toast, you’ll need:


  • 3-4 pieces of bread (your choice which kind!)
  • 3 eggs
  • cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Mix the cinnamon (again, it’s up to you how much. I like to keep my french toast mild, so I only use about 2 teaspoons) and eggs in a bowl, scrambling with a fork until combined. Heat a skillet over medium heat on the stove, melting the tablespoon of butter.  Soak your bread in the egg mixture, being sure to coat both side evenly. Place in the pan and cook, flipping the french toast occasionally, until both sides are browned and a bit caramelized.

Serve the french toast with a dusting of powdered sugar (if you want) and some maple syrup (Vermont Maid was a staple in our house growing up). Cut it up, then enjoy with some coffee and these links from around the web this week:

This week’s Sunday Edition is brought to you in (fake) part by the Chobani Bar in Soho. Picture every flavor of Chobani yogurt, coupled with amazing toppings in why-didn’t-I-think-of-that combos. Yeah, it’s super delicious. And yeah, I probably go there way too much.


Yogurt is a weekday staple of mine, but on the weekends I like to fancy it up a bit. My favorite Chobani-bar replica is up first: peanut butter and jelly. Usually I like to add fresh grapes to this as well, but none of the ones in the store looked good enough to buy (boooo to winter produce). Simply put one serving cup plain Chobani yogurt (or any kind you’d like) in a bowl and swirl in natural peanut butter (I love love love Justin’s) and jelly or preserves (I went for raspberry!).

Blood orange and pistachio This is the most “savory” option of the bunch. The blood orange packs a tart punch (and pretty color), while the pistachio adds the salty crunch. Not for everybody, but I find it super delicious!

Blackberry, honey and almond Consider this the classic of the trio. Berries, honey and yogurt will go down in the history books as a timeless, delicious combo. Coupled with the slivered almonds, this will literally keep me full for hours. Plus, I always feel really healthy after eating it. Always a bonus in my book!

Happy Sunday, you guys! When I was reevaluating my ideas for this space around the holidays, I realized I really missed my “Sunday Edition” link sharing posts. I always love discovering new blog posts or articles I missed during the week, and I wanted to bring that feature back. The twist? Well, it’s pretty yummy. You see, Sundays are my day. They’re not jam-packet with fun plans and errands like Saturdays seem to be, and one thing I always make a point to do on Sundays is make myself a yummy breakfast–it’s a nice change of pace to the yogurts that serve as my a.m. meal during the week.


So the new version of The Sunday Edition will include a quick, yummy breakfast recipe (we all know it’s the best meal anyways) and a few great links to read alongside it. First up? Chia seed breakfast pudding!

Don’t let the word “pudding” fool you…this is actually a super healthy and filling breakfast. I’m sure by now you’ve heard of magical chia seeds, and this recipe combo’s them with two other ingredients to make a delicious savory breakfast.


You’ll need:


  • 1/4 cup chia seeds
  • 3/4 cup almond milk (or regular milk)
  • agave
  • berries

Simply combine the chia seeds, milk and agave (the amount is up to you, depending on how sweet you like it) in a bowl and whisk with a fork until all the seeds are combined and damp from the milk. Put into the fridge for five minutes, take out to whisk again, then back in the fridge for another 5-8 minutes. You’ll notice the seeds will start to develop a gelatinous film around them and it will take on the consistency of pudding–this is what you want! Let it sit until all the milk has absorbed, then top with berries and enjoy with these fun links:
