kate spade inspired dishware DIY

Kate Spade consistently knocks my socks off. I’ve never met an item by the brand that I didn’t love, whether that was a gorgeous bag (like this beauty), a stunning necklace, or in this instance, a great set of dishware.

If you told me a few years ago that I’d one day be begging for dishes instead of a new pieces of clothing for Christmas, I’d tell you you were crazy–but that’s just what’s happened, ever since I laid eyes on the charming polka dot set above. I know that you’re supposed to buy your first fancy dish set when you get married (my current one is from C&B), but I think it’s rubbish that society expects me to wait until then. I want these dishes, and I want them now.

IMG 0091 kate spade inspired dishware DIY

Well, I also want a bigger bank account, apparently, because these babies cost a pretty penny. Never one to shy away from a good old DIY, I headed out to pick up a few supplies.

IMG 0093 kate spade inspired dishware DIY

I can’t say I’m an artist, but I can handle the basics–lines, dots, hearts–which is all that’s necessary to pull off this project. You’ll need ceramic-safe gold paint (or really any color of your choice), a few brushes you don’t mind ruining, and the dishware of your choice.

IMG 0095 kate spade inspired dishware DIY

Simply paint on whatever designs you’d like. I went for a gold base on one dish, polka dots on another, a gold rim and heart on one cup, and polka dots on the other. I reccommend you do two coats to ensure your paint looks opaque enough (the plate above is with one) and let them dry well in between.

IMG 0107 kate spade inspired dishware DIY

Once you’re satisfied and the paint has dried completely, you need to “fire” the pieces. If you took (and did terrible in) 8th grade ceramics like me, you’ll remember firing your pieces in the kiln–this is similar, just in a 300 degree oven for a half hour instead.

IMG 0187 kate spade inspired dishware DIY

Once that half hour is up, they are officially food and dishwasher safe (not that it matters, because I don’t have one).

I think Kate would be proud, no?

Where do you get off being so talented?! I wish I had the time and patience to do something like this. They’re gorgeous. Bravo!

What a great little project! I was obsessed with the polka dot china as well, but my husband vetoed during the registry. :( I’ll have to craft some of my own as well!

Haha the price is like a punch to the gut. I was so glad my DIY version came out semi-decent!

  • http://howboutsomecake.wordpress.com how bout some cake

First, I’m impressed that you have matching dishes. I’m 27 and have a conglomerate of three different “patterns”, so you’re basically more of a grown-up than I am. Also, this DIY is genius! I especially love that they’re dishwasher safe.

    • alongobucco

That’s like my silverware! It’s such a mishmash of styles, but I really could care less. Also, my glasses. I break them constantly, and then end up buying a different style. Oh well!

  • http://www.alwaysmaylee.com Always Maylee

This is such a brilliant idea, LOVE this! I’m pretty sure my husband won’t let me do this to our china, but what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him. :)

Love these! What a fun little project. And I’m with you on wanting nice dishes… some of them I use even more than clothes, so I want to have the ones I love. And my Anthropologie bowls make me happy every single morning when I eat my cereal, so they were totally worth it!

    • alongobucco

Thanks, Anne! I love all of Anthro’s dishware. They always have the most charming patterns, and it seems to last forever. I’ve never broken anything from there…which really says a lot!

This is so cute!!! I have been seeing similar projects (with sharpie marker, I think) and have wanted to try it. I have some boring white mugs/bowls that could use some sprucing up…I wonder if John will notice if they suddenly become polka dotted…:)

    Stephanie

    • alongobucco

Thanks, Steph! I’ve heard Sharpies work, too–I think the key is baking them for a bit to “set” the design. I’d love to see how yours turn out. I’m sure John will appreciate :)
