let’s talk: soul mates

164733298840127550 gux4f7Zf c lets talk: soul mates

I am probably the biggest romantic you will ever find. I believe in fate, true love, perfect moments and all of those warm ideals. I pin wedding ideas when I’m nowhere close to getting married. I swoon at the love tales of seasoned couples. I also believe in soul mates. I don’t, however, believe a soul mate is only the person you marry. I believe your soul mates can be found at the lunch table in high school, on your soccer team, in the dorm room across the hall, over a transcendent cup of coffee in a small cafe. I believe that finding your soul mates in this life is part chemistry, part luck and part magic.

I can safely say that I have over 10 soul mates. They’ve seen me at my worst, and cheered me at my best. They’ve laughed with me and cried for me. They are my insides; I wouldn’t be (couldn’t be) me without them.

Female friendships are incredible. The idea of forming relationships that span decades, that overcome divorce and death, petty drunken fights and explosive arguments–those are the makings of soul mates. To lack that is to lack luster and the very ingredients that make this life so magical. They say to never trust a woman who can’t maintain female friendships, but I don’t mistrust that woman–I pity her. For what kind of life is a life without soul mates?

Over the years, I’ve seen friendships come and go. Some have grown stronger, some have dimmed, some have manifested themselves in situations I never saw coming–but none, none have been regretted. I’ve learned a little from each one of the amazing girls in my life, and I owe each of them a little piece of the person I’ve become to-date.

Who knows who will be by my side in 10, 20, 30 years. I do know one thing, and it is this: the real soul mates in this life aren’t only our one great love (or even the men from our small loves), but the girls you attach yourself to along the way, the ones that become so ingrained in you that you can’t imagine life without them. In the infamous words of Carrie Bradshaw: Maybe our girlfriends are our soul mates, and guys are just people to have fun with.

Awww I want to cry. I agree totally. I have 4 or 5 other soul mates besides my husband. And love the Carrie Bradshaw quote! xoxo

I totally agree with you on the concept of soul mates. I have a couple of girlfriends that I feel are my soul mates. Sometimes there is just no other way to describe that type of friendship. But my husband is/will always be my number 1 soul mate. I’m lucky enough to have found someone that I can share everything with, laugh with everyday, and be my absolute self with. :)

Yes. Yes. Yes. I’m loving this post. I’ve said this forever and ever and it’s so nice to hear it coming from someone like you, too! People get so stuck in their definitions of soul mates that they lose the true meaning of it. Thank you for sharing yourself and your views on it. Terrific post.

Oh my goodness.. this post made me cry. This is EXACTLY how I feel about my best girl friends. They truly are a part of me and I’d be lost without them. I too pity women who say they don’t have girlfriends. They are missing out on more than they’ll ever know. LOVE the ‘sex and the city’ quote at the end.. I’ve always loved that one and felt it to be so true! GREAT post!!!

I think finding “the one” is incredible, but there are just some things that aren’t the same with a guy as they are with your ladies. You definitely need both!

Great post, I agree, with you. That is one of my favorite lines from SATC:)

This is such a sweet post! I have a couple friends who have played a vital role and who I’ve known for more than half my life! Much like the soul mate you’ll marry one day, these friends play an almost bigger role in your life and have been there all along. I’ve definitely had my share of bad friends over the years and realized that some aren’t worth fighting for. It’s like finding your soul mate, along the way you run into the good and the bad.

alyssa, this post is truly so beautiful. it touched my heart so very much and i am so lucky to have you as one of my soul mates. In this short life, if we can find a core group of females to share our hopes, dreams, ambitions, joys, sorrows, heartaches and moment of sheer bliss with we are truly lucky. I want to call each of my soul mates and tell them just how much i love them. thanks for the beautifully written post <3

Oh Alyssa, you are SO right! When people think of soulmates they think of love and “the one,” but you can definitely have friends who are soulmates too! The friendships you talk about are what makes life so magical and enjoyable along with our romantic relationships. Loved reading this!
