DIY emergency outfit kit

emergencykit DIY emergency outfit kit

I’m sort of disaster-prone. Not in only in the sense of “Oh, I tripped and fell,” (although, that too), but also in the snag your tights, stain your shirt kind of way. A full-time big girl job has required that I pretty much look presentable for 12 hours straight, and sometimes my social life post-work warrants even longer.

After my first few mishaps earlier this year (one involving an entire cup of coffee), it was clear that I needed some sort of emergency stash to carry around with me. Coincidentally, I stumbled upon this adorable Pamela Barsky bag (1) at Artists and Fleas in Brooklyn the next weekend, and decided to turn it into my own little kit. Here’s what I make sure is always stocked in there–and yes, this ALL fits!

2. Roller ball perfume: These little tubes are small, easy and perfect for a scent touch-up before heading out to drinks. Mine’s Twirl, by Kate Spade.

3. Mini hairspray: We all know hairspray is great for taming a rouge flyaway, but it also works wonders for static. I use it on dresses that have justtttt a bit too much cling, if you know what I mean. My current pick doing double-duty: L’Oreal Elnett, after being recommended by so many of you here!

4. Multi-use makeup: I’m not a fan of carrying around a stockpile of makeup–it’s heavy, and more often than not, it gets ruined. I do, however, like to keep a mini bottle of Benetint in my kit…it doubles as both a lip tint and cheek tint and somehow magically pulls you together at the end of a workday if need be.

5. Hanky Panky pair: Let’s get real here: we’ve all had those days where you don’t realize your skirt/dress/pants are see-through–until you notice it in the harsh light of your work bathroom. Considering I’ve subjected myself to this embarrassment numerous times, I’ve started to keep a pair of nude Hanky Panky underwear in my bag. They’re rolled up small and are super comfortable–and if you’re anything like me, once you put them in there, you’ll never make the mistake again (funny how that works…).

6. Safety pins: So, your zipper ripped after that bagel at breakfast and you still have a whole work day to get through. What do you do? Safety pin it! If anyone asks, just tell them it’s a fashion statement.

7. Needle and thread: You’d be surprised at the number of times I’ve reached for this duo for a quick fix. Thank goodness number 13 is included, because I tend to be not great at things involving sharp objects.

8. Bobby pins: Bobby pins are the kind of thing you just can’t seem to find when you need them, but otherwise they’re filling up the bottom of your bag. To make sure I always have one (or five) on-hand to tame my curly hair, I keep a stash in my kit. Plus, everyone always asks for bobby pins, so it’s a great way to make friends.

9. Tide-to-go pen: The sanity saver of moms, sloppy girls and soup aficionados everywhere. Enough said.

10. Colgate Wisps: These amazing little do-dads are perfect for when you need to freshen up after lunch or before heading to an important meeting.

11. Clear nail polish: No emergency kit would be complete without clear nail polish. It is the triple threat of the bunch. Use it to stop a run in your tights, keep ends from fraying on clothes or even seal costume jewelry that’s leaving an unsightly tarnish on your skin.

12. Advil: You can’t look your best if you’re not feeling your best. I suffer from really, really terrible migraines, so having that medicine with me is always a must. In case I forget my prescription, I make sure to keep a few Advil pills in my kit–it works in a pinch!

13. Band aids: Blisters are the bane of my existence. I don’t think women should be penalized for wearing pretty shoes, so I don’t know why blisters insist on existing. I digress–the moral of the story is, always keep band aids on hand. Bonus points if they’re Cynthia Rowley!

Is there anything I’m missing? What do you always keep handy in case of an outfit emergency?

Ah if only I was as organised as you. Completely agree to everything in that bag of yours. Isn’t Benetint incredible? It’s saved me from looking like a lifeless zombie more times than I can remember.

Haha trust me Jenee, this is the peak of my organization! My room is a mess. And yes, the Benetint is a lifesaver–I also love it’s rose-y smell!

  • http://recentlytheblog.blogspot.com Emily

Oh my goodness, that bag is perfection! I even insisted on wearing mascara when I was giving birth, so I completely agree. :)

    • alongobucco

Haha mascara is a MUST. Maybe I should put a mini version of that in my bag, too!

Isn’t it great?! When I saw it, I knew I had to have it!

  • http://howboutsomecake.wordpress.com how bout some cake

This is so smart. I believe that clear nail polish is also great for little windshield chips. You know how a little chip can become a huge crack? The polish fills it in and prevents that… at least for a little while while you save up for repairs. Maybe not a big deal for you in NYC, but a piece of knowledge gold for people in cities like Atlanta where an hour in your car is a totally normal thing.

    • alongobucco

Oh, I had no idea! What a great tip–I swear it has so many uses!

Ha Ha! Words to live by. Mascara is definitely the way to go in an emergency.

I’ve got a little kit like this at my desk at work, but you’ve mentioned a few items I’ll need to add to it for sure!

    • alongobucco

I keep it in my desk, too! The trick is remembering to take it with my in my purse when I leave just in case. Easier said than done!

I am sooooooo accident prone, that tide on-the-go pen is a MUST for me. I spill everything, coffee all over my white jeans wsa the worst one – while at work. Bad times.

EEK! Your poor white jeans, Bree!

  • http://www.rachaelkhawkins.blogspot.com Rachae

UMMMM, absolutely perfect list of things to keep in your purse. A lot of which I already have in there but some new ones that I wouldn’t have thought of, specifically the undies. Good idea! And there’s the Kate Spade Twirl again :) LOVE it!

  • http://jennacwest.wordpress.com jennacwest

This is such a smart idea and very cute idea! I am always the one who needs something and never has it. Or once I have it for those emergency situations I never have it. I love this idea especially the bandaids for blisters!

    • alongobucco

Thanks so much! The band aids definitely come in handy when breaking in new shoes AND commuting in the city!

  • http://twenty-somethingblog.com twenty-something

Bursted into laughter at number 6 – because I totally busted a zipper on my pants like a week ago (so sad). I love the idea of carrying around an emergency kit and everything on here is a must! You’ve inspired me to make one of my own. I get super bad headaches too so I always have to have Advil on hand. The only thing I’d add would be a mini deodorant – you just never know when you’ll need to freshen up!

    Stephanie

    • alongobucco

Oh mini deodorant is such a good addition. There’s literally nothing worse than realizing you didn’t apply for the day. Yikes!

  • http://ashleynicolecatherine.blogspot.com ashley

so great! and how cute are those band aids?? this reminds me of my wedding day kit. i’d also add tissues and oil blotting sheets!

    • alongobucco

I can’t believe I don’t have oil blotting sheets in mine. I swear, those are a life (and face) saver.

Another quick tip if you don’t have a safety pin — use your keychain. I’ve used a keychain loop before to hold together a busted button hole. Sure, it won’t poke through fabric like a safety pin, but it can swoop in and help in a pinch!

    • alongobucco

That is genius! I would have never thought of that!

  • Wore Out

Oh my god, the lighting in our bathroom at the office is horrific too! I hate when it takes me almost all day to figure out my underwear is visible…. never good. This kit has everything you could ever need and more.

Benetint is seriously a miracle worker!! I use it for everything. Benefit high beam is also a love of mine – it’s a supermodel in a bottle. This is a great post – I definitely need to keep some hanky pankies with me just in case!

    • alongobucco

I love the high beam, too! As far as highlighters go, it’s really sheer and leave such a nice accent on your skin!

  • http://looksharpsconnie.blogspot.com/ Gabrielle

Oh my gosh. LOVE this post! I am exactly the same way, so I don’t know what i didn’t come to such a brilliant conclusion sooner. Keeping all of this in one place would not only save unneeded stress and worry, but money too! I end up wasting so much buying this stuff all the time on the fly when I get stuck in “emergencies.”

My favorite is definitely the Tide pen – I’m pretty sure it’s saved my life. Just be careful at the airport – they’ll steal yours from you!

I always carry floss too. Must have for all of those wayward salad greens roaming around between my teeth. Flattering, I know.

    Great post!

    -Gabrielle

    • alongobucco

Aw, thanks so much Gabrielle! I had no idea they took tide pens at the airport. Why is that?

What a great idea! I have a drawer in my desk drawer at work which has the necessities (contact solution, toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, advil…) but don’t have any of the beauty essentials I should have… brush, mascara, coverup, etc. This is a great list to complete my drawer!

    • alongobucco

I’m so glad I could help, Laura! Floss is totally a great addition, too!

  • http://fancynopants.blogspot.com lily

me too, sister! i could not survive without bobby pins & elnet. i also always need aquaphor!!
