get cozy for fall

Let’s face it: our wardrobe isn’t the only thing that should change come fall. Transforming your home to reflect the seasons can really influence your design style and make your space more enjoyable to live in.

I love the idea of incorporating warm elements into the existing decor of my home once the weather turns cooler–the idea of having an inviting space to cozy up to is so alluring to me (even if my apartment doesn’t have a coveted fireplace…sigh…). Consider swapping out your existing pillows for darker ones (pillow covers works great for a cheap and easy change-up!), adding a few cashmere throws or replacing your light linen curtains with a heavier weight fabric like a brushed cotton twill. I’ve rounded up a few pretty pieces that make dressing your house for fall almost as fun as dressing yourself.

cozyhome get cozy for fall

1. Go for softer lighting. I have bright white lamps right now, but come fall I’m looking to swap them out for warmer lamps that cast a soft light. The days are already getting dark, so coming home to a house with a soft glow is ideal! When picking out a lamp, look for a interesting metallic base, like this mercury glass base, a lampshade that blocks a bit of light and a bulb that casts more of a yellow light than a white light.

2. Grab a soft throw. If you can swing it ($$), cashmere throws are a great way to warm up your space for the fall and winter months. Not only are they nice to cozy up with on cold nights, but they add an interesting element to your room when thrown over a couch or chair. Pick one in a neutral or warm winter tone–they’re investments, so you want a color that can go with any room!

3. Switch up your scents. What smells evoke fall to you? For me it’s cinnamon, apple pie and pumpkin (what can I say, I’m traditional). Whatever does it for you, fill your home with those seasonal scents. If you don’t feel like going full-on fall, stick to a candle infused with scents that feel warm and special. Think candied fruits, woodsy elements and vanilla notes. One of my favorites is the Capri Blue Volcano candle–I seriously buy the embarrassingly large size once every few months in the winter.

4. Warm up the floor. Adding a rug to otherwise bare floors in the winter is great for a few reasons. Obviously, it keeps your tootsies warm (and as someone who has the cold feet of an 80-year-old man, I appreciate this), but past that, you can use the color and texture of the rug you choose to bring your room into the fall and winter months. I have a sneaking suspicion that this deep color ombre version from West Elm would look great with my white couches.

5. Bring the outdoors in. As much as I love flowers, they always seem slightly out of place to me in the late fall/winter months. To infused your home with a bit of the outdoors, turn to rustic elements, like bark vases filled with a hearty (and interesting!) winter plants like witch hazel or juniper.

6. Accessorize with metals. Darker metals like copper and bronze go well with the feel of a fall/winter room. Pull in accessories (it could be anything from bookends to a lantern candle holder) in these metals to add an instant look to your room.

7. Swap out furniture. Obviously, this isn’t the most practical tip when it comes to your bank account, but if you can afford it, swapping out your furniture can definitely change up the look of your room. If I could, I’d switch my teal armchair for this navy version!

8. Trade your art. Art is one of the quickest (and easiest!) ways to transform the seasonal feel of your room. I like to switch brightly colored summer pieces for black and white photography and art, like this print of Paul McCartney from Society6 (no judging!). If you don’t feel like swapping out your art, consider painting the frames a darker shade (or pretty metallic) to go along with your more seasonal room!

9. Add some plush. Fall and winter is all about indoor entertaining. Pillow seats not only warm up a room (hello, anything plush pretty much screams “cozy”), but they allow extra seating for when friends come over! This corduroy version from Urban Outfitters seems so comfortable!

How about you guys? Do you tweak your decor for the seasons? Any tips?

Great post, Alyssa! I can relate to the old man cold feet thing, my toesies are always freezing! I’m still on the hunt for the perfect living room rug, so crossing my fingers I find one soon. We have dimmer switches on both of the fans in our living room, so that helps to warm up the space quickly when we don’t want to switch out lamps. Candles always help too, I love the fall smells of cinnamon and pumpkin. It’s amazing what dim lights and a few candles can do to warm up a space!

Thank so much, Stephanie! Too funny that you have cold feet too–the only thing that helps me is super thick wool socks in the winter (so I look like such a nerd!). Good luck with your rug hunt, I’m sure you’ll find something great!

      • http://pearlslace.wordpress.com Pearls and Lace

Ok thankfully I’m not the only one whose toes freeze when it gets the slightest bit cold! I think that’s my body’s way of telling me that I should buy more leather boots lol

        • alongobucco

Haha oh, I totally agree! I use it as an excuse to by more shoes, dorky wool socks and cute slippers. Not the worst thing that could happen!

This is one reason I love getting the Pottery Barn mag in the mail….love switching up home accents for the fall!!!

    • alongobucco

Totally, me too!! When I was younger, I used to go through and circle the things I wanted my mom to buy for our home in fall and winter–that goodness she didn’t listen, or we’d have a LOT of fake pumpkins hanging around!

  • http://little-white-whale.com/ little white whale

I want to sip hot chocolate in all of these rooms!

    • alongobucco

Haha that is the perfect way to put it–me too! With marshmallows, of course!

  • http://pearlslace.wordpress.com Pearls and Lace

Love love love this post! I’ve been waiting to do one on cozy living rooms for fall. Love the idea of changing candle scents – I totally love anything cinnamon or pumpkin! Investing in a soft throw is also a fabulous idea; I’ve got my eye on one at Pottery Barn that looks like a giant chunky knit scarf! The weather here has been gorgeous and summery but I am looking forward to curling up in front of the fire with some hot cocoa and a good book come the end of September when the weather is sure to turn cool.

    xo, jen

    • alongobucco

That throw from Pottery Barn sounds perfect! The weather is still really nice here too, and I know I shouldn’t be wishing it away, but I just can’t help it–I want fall weather! Thanks for stopping by, Jen! xo

      • http://pearlslace.wordpress.com Pearls and Lace

I’m so torn between wanting the summer weather to stick around and fall setting in! I think each day I change my mind lol. This is the throw I’ve been eyeing up: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/wesley-knit-throw/?pkey=cthrows-blankets. I think it would be the best thing to snuggle up in…it’s just a little pricey :(

        • alongobucco

Omg, that is so gorgeous! I’m seriously lusting after it too now. I guess the good thing is that it will last you forever (and can match any room’s decor). I say go for it!

I LOVE this post! I’m all about bringing the outdoors in in the winter months. One of my favorite things to do is take tree branches and arrange them in a large vase with Christmas lights wrapped around them. It gives a rustic yet cute look that I love… and you don’t have to water branches! hehe :)

    xx
    M

    • alongobucco

I LOVE that idea! Where do you stick the end of the wire? Do you drill a hole in the back of the vase? I’d love to try it out! And you’re so right–no watering branches. One thing I can actually keep alive!

      • http://kitchenclosetheart.com kitchenclosetheart

I’ll wrap the lights around the top of the vase and then drape them down the back. No drilling required! It’s a fuss-free look. Glad you like that idea!

        • alongobucco

So cute and easy…I can’t wait to try it out!

hmm, these are definitely good tips! I hadn’t even thought about ‘dressing’ my apartment for fall/winter until a friend mentioned it the other day. I live near the beach so I suppose I can keep a beachy vibe but these are good tips!

    • alongobucco

This is my first time living alone, so besides the basic decorating for Christmas, I never really gave much thought to it either! I think you can definitely keep the beachy vibe and still evoke fall!
